causes of constant flatulence

What Causes Constant Flatulence?

There are several causes of flatulence, but before we get into what those causes are, let us be sure we understand a few key points about flatulence. Flatulence is a normal bodily function that occurs when the bacteria in the gut break down the food we have eaten. The passing of gas is a sign of a healthy digestive system; in fact, the average adult farts anywhere from 10 to 15 times every day. All people will pass wind more often in the evening as the body’s digestive system is more efficient when we are sleeping.

Let us identify some of the leading causes of constant flatulence:

Diet

As you may expect, the food you eat can affect how often you will fart. Fatty foods are known to cause flatulence; these include pork and other meats. The fatty foods will take longer to digest, meaning they will stay in the digestive system and begin to fester, which will cause smelly farts. Other foods that will cause flatulence are eggs, beans, onions, dairy, and cruciferous vegetables.

Obesity

Yes, being overweight can cause constant flatulence. This is because the digestive system is not working as well as it should when you are obese. The system is under great strain and can’t keep up with the food intake; this causes a back up in the gut and will result in bloating, excessive flatulence, and smelly farts.

Irritable bowel syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome is an intestinal disorder that causes bellyache, constipation, diarrhea, and gas. This is quite a common condition, with over 200,000 cases in the US every year. There is no official cure for irritable bowel syndrome, but treatment will reduce some of the symptoms.

Lactose intolerance

The body’s inability to breakdown and fully digest the sugar lactose found in dairy products can result in flatulence. Lactose intolerance is caused by a deficiency of the enzyme lactase, which is the enzyme that breaks down the sugar. Over 3 million Americans suffer from lactose intolerance; many will have to ensure they avoid dairy at all times.

Eating too fast

Eating your food too quickly can also result in excessive flatulence. As you chew and swallow food, you are even swallowing air. The air that is being swallowed needs to be released from the body; this either happens as a burp or a fart. This can be avoided by chewing your food slowly and completely before swallowing.

Chewing gum and smoking cigarettes

Chewing gum and smoking cigarettes can also cause flatulence. As you chew the gum, you are swallowing air, and as you inhale the cigarette smoke, you are forcing air into the digestive system. Any air that goes into the digestive system needs to be released or may result in bloating and other stomach issues.

Overeating

Overeating is a common cause of constant flatulence. As you overeat, it causes a backup in the digestive system that will lead to flatulence and result in smelly farts.

Is there a flatulence treatment?

There are several flatulence treatment options, one of which is to ensure you have a balanced diet. A balanced diet will help keep your digestive system healthy, meaning it will work better. Another flatulence treatment is to exercise regularly; this will improve digestion and prevent a digestive system block.
